Audible announced three new AI-powered listening features on October 1, but only one of them, Character Guide, was confirmed live when the beta opened. The other two features announced that day, Interactive Stories and Visual Explorer, are still marked "coming soon" or "rolling out this fall," not live.
The whole suite is a limited beta open only to Audible customers in the United States and the United Kingdom, tied to a handful of specific titles rather than the full catalog, according to Audible's newsroom announcement. Outside those two countries, the beta doesn't apply yet. The announcement names specific titles but doesn't explain whether other titles or accounts are included.
Here's the state of each feature as of this week:
Live now: Character Guide, limited beta, confirmed for Dracula and 1984
Announced, not confirmed live: Interactive Stories, starting with Renfield in Dracula
Coming soon, no date: Visual Explorer
November 5: Exoplanet adds Character Guide and a new Interactive Story
Unknown: account eligibility, supported platforms, membership requirements, and data/interaction policies
Which Audible AI-powered listening features can you use now?
Character Guide is the one feature that went live on launch day. It displays who's speaking in real time directly on the player page, so listeners don't lose track of who just said what.
It also adds spoiler-free character cards showing the narrator behind each voice along with a short bio. TechCrunch reports listeners will later be able to ask the guide questions about the story as it unfolds. Audible's materials describe that same future update as letting listeners ask questions about the production. Neither version is live yet.
TechCrunch frames Character Guide as a fix for a problem specific to audio: tracking a large cast is harder when listening than reading, since there's no flipping back a page to check a name. Audible presents the feature as a way to address that problem.
Which audiobooks support Character Guide
The launch materials name three titles. The Audible Original Bram Stoker's Dracula got Character Guide on October 1, alongside the existing Audible Original George Orwell's 1984.
Audible says Exoplanet, from writer Benjamin Percy and executive producer Andy Weir, will receive Character Guide when it launches on November 5.
The cited launch materials do not name any other titles. There isn't enough published detail to say whether speaker labels will ever appear outside these three, or how eligibility might work for titles added later.
Audible Interactive Story: chat with a character, but not yet live
Interactive Story is the second feature in the suite, letting listeners hold a real-time, generative-AI conversation with a book character. It starts with Renfield, Dracula's servant.
The character speaks first, assigning the listener a role, a goal, and some stakes. The listener responds in their own words, and the character reacts in real time.
Audible says it is "rolling out this fall." That wording indicates the feature was announced but not confirmed as available. A second Interactive Story, built around Exoplanet with author Benjamin Percy, is scheduled to follow on November 5.
Audible's Chief Product and Analytics Officer, Andy Tsao, said the experiences should remain part of the authors' vision while giving listeners something more personal and unique. Creators are involved in the foundations of these conversations.
Audible Visual Explorer: what it does, and why it isn't live yet
Visual Explorer is meant to surface maps, images, and supplemental context at chosen points in a story, without listeners losing their place.
Where Interactive Story is rolling out this fall, Visual Explorer carries no timeline at all. Audible labels it "coming soon" without a date attached.
The title tied to Visual Explorer's debut is where the reporting gets messy. Audible's newsroom and Engadget both name it The Cultural Tutor's Grand Tour: The Story of Europe in Six Cities, by author Sheehan Quirke. PPC Land and TechCrunch, however, name a different Quirke title, The Cultural Tutor: A Modern Guide to History, Art, and Philosophy in 49 Short Chapters. The secondary reports conflict, but Audible's own announcement names The Cultural Tutor's Grand Tour: The Story of Europe in Six Cities as the title receiving Visual Explorer, making that the stronger source for the planned beta.
Quirke described his role in shaping the feature in Audible's announcement: 'I was able to shape what listeners see and when they see it.
What Audible hasn't explained yet
The October 1 announcement does not say:
Whether access is assigned by account or by title
Whether a specific Audible membership tier is required
Which platforms, iOS, Android, or web, support the features
Whether Interactive Stories conversations happen by voice, text, or both
Whether those conversations are stored or used to train future AI models
The cited announcement does not address them. Until Audible does, there's no reliable way to know how broadly, or how consistently, any of these features actually work.
What to check before expecting access
An Audible account based in the U.S. or U.K. with Dracula or 1984 already in the library can check the player page for Character Guide to see whether the feature appears. Audible hasn't described any separate toggle or enrollment step to turn it on.
For Interactive Stories and Visual Explorer, there's no confirmed way to get access yet. Watching Audible's app update notes and newsroom page is the more reliable move than assuming beta access just because both features were named alongside Character Guide in the same announcement.
The November 5 release of Exoplanet is the next announced expansion, adding both Character Guide and a new Interactive Story. For now, Character Guide is confirmed for two available titles, Dracula and 1984, with Exoplanet due November 5. The broader beta remains limited, and its access rules are still unclear.
